Robert Newton
Robert Newton is a British artist who studied Fine Art at Sunderland University.
Currently residing in the north-east of England, Robert is known for both his expressive landscape works and intense small-scale paintings and monotypes. His smaller works are intimate tablets of colour, tone and energetic mark-making. At first glance they appear to be loosely painted without any resolution, almost casual in execution – and yet upon closer inspection reveal everything seen and felt, with every mark of paint carefully considered, a process requiring intuition and confident sublime mark-making, with each work being discovered rather than designed.
The larger paintings follow the same theme where there is trust deeply rooted in the repetition and practice of craft over many years, with an awareness of the history of painting.
Rather than define any geographically specific location, the works are a record of memories and experiences whilst exploring contemporary environmental and existential issues and wholly embracing self-discovery through artistic expression.
