Matthew Snowden
Born in Heswall, Wirral in 1969, Matthew is fast becoming one of the most sought after landscape artists working today. His bold paintings executed exclusively with a palette knife in generous impasto acrylic have attracted a wide following amongst art collectors.
Since graduating Matthew had a brief spell in the world of advertising, before becoming disillusioned with it and leaving in 1995 to pursue his passion for painting outdoors, full time.
For the first ten years of his life, Matthew completed all his painting “en plein air”. Using a campervan as his base, Matthew has travelled and painted throughout the UK and Ireland. His favourite places he returns to regularly are the rugged Celtic west coasts of Scotland, Cornwall and his beloved Anglesey and North Wales.
After gathering sketches, photographs and most importantly absorbing the landscapes on location, Matthew completes his paintings back in the studio.
Working quickly and decisively and mostly from memory, completing each painting in one whole session he has developed a bold and intuitive method of painting based largely on his formative years as an “en plain air” painter.
Matthew has had 4 very successful solo exhibitions at Gorstella Gallery.
