Colin See-Paynton’s powerful but marvellously subtle wood engravings have been seen at Gorstella Gallery on a number of occasions and never fail to excite and impress.
Colin began his formal studies at Northampton School of Art, and he now lives in a remote farmhouse in Wales, having been a full time painter and printmaker since 1967.
His wood engravings and watercolours have been exhibited widely throughout Wales and England and in particular he has exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, the RoyalCambrianAcademy in Wales and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and Engravers at the Bankside Gallery in London.
Colin’s work has been used extensively in book illustrations particularly in publications by Gregynog Press produced in conjunction with the University of Wales.
These wood engravings capture with great accuracy the characteristics and movements of birds and form part of a recently published book “Of a Feather” which is available to buy at this exhibition. These works are often of great complexity and it is sometimes hard to appreciate that they have actually been engraved onto a wooden block.
His work is held in many public collections, including National Library of Wales; Freemantle Museum and Ar tGallery; Belfast City Art Gallery and the Ashmolean in Oxford.
