Hilary Paynter’s working life began with art teaching but developed through an interest in challenging and deviant behaviour which led eventually to her training as a Chartered Educational Pyschologist.
Her career in education ran parallel to that in wood engraving for 35 years. A crammed life dictated an urgent approach to wood engraving as well as extremely tight organisation.
Hilary Paynter was instrumental in the re-forming of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1984 and has been its lynchpin ever since, first as Honorary Secretary and latterly as Chairman.
