Ian Stephens has been engraving since 1961, producing mainly fine art prints of landscapes, concentrating on his home territory of North Bucks and South Northants.
Ian writes “…my work is chiefly concerned with the landscape; its form, its uses and its denizens. Endeavouring always to be objective about how it is rather than how it was or might be: though these factors do hold a great fascination for me, especially in the traces left behind in the shape of trackways, settlements and so forth. I try not to let the medium or process get in the way. Though I enjoy engraving and printing wood blocks immensely, it is only the medium through which I choose to explore my ideas; a secondary rather than a primary consideration”.
Ian taught art in local schools before resuming a career in commercial studios. He has been a freelance illustrator and graphic designer since 1990. He exhibits widely and his works are in collections throughout Britain and many countries overseas.
He became a member of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1984 and was the Society’s Chairman from 1992-1995 and he is an Honorary Retired Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.
